EXPRESSTOLL is an electronic toll payment service provided by Enterprise that allows you to use the toll motorway network in Ireland, including the M50 free flow motorway, with the use of an installed toll tag on the rental car’s windscreen. When the EXPRESSTOLL transponder box is flipped open the device will communicate with tolling cameras and sensors in both barrier and barrier-free lanes.

You can use EXPRESSTOLL on all toll motorways across the Republic of Ireland, including the M50 free flow. Your EXPRESSTOLL electronic toll tag will allow you to pass through any toll lane, including regular barriered lanes, express lanes and non-barriered electronic toll lanes.

For the express toll lanes, you will need to slow down, but you will not need to stop, for the barrier to open. If the express toll lane is too busy, you can choose to use a regular toll lane. The EXPRESSTOLL service will work but, in this case, you will need to stop for approximately 5 seconds for the barrier to open.

You can add EXPRESSTOLL to your reservation, add it to your contract at the rental counter at the start of your rental, or by opening the toll tag shield box at any time during your rental period. If you choose to do so, make sure that the toll tag shield box is opened for the entire duration of your rental.

We recommend you open the toll tag shield box at the start of your rental as it needs sufficient time to communicate with the cameras and sensors as you approach the toll plazas.

Toll information is provided to us, as the registered owner of the vehicle, from a municipality or toll road authority. The information – based on the date, time, and vehicle – indicates that you were the renter.

No, you are free to use your own transponder or pay cash or card where available. You can also check with the toll authority to understand different payment options that may be available.

If you do not wish to use EXPRESSTOLL and your rental vehicle is equipped with a transponder, make sure the box remains closed during your rental and avoid using posted eToll express toll lanes or Automatic Coin Machine (ACM) lanes even if the transponder box remains closed, using these lanes can activate EXPRESSTOLL on your rental.

If your rental vehicle is equipped with a EXPRESSTOLL box, make sure it remains closed. If you choose to use the manually operated toll lanes during your rental, you will need to pay all tolls with cash, credit card or an adequately funded personal toll tag, which needs to be properly placed in the rental vehicle.

You should not use eToll express toll lanes or Automatic Coin Machine (ACM) lanes if you do not want to use EXPRESSTOLL. Even if the EXPRESSTOLL shield box remains closed, the cost of tolls will be charged to the rental vehicle. If this occurs, you will be responsible to pay for any incurred toll charges.

If you drive through the toll plaza at M1 or M7/M8 motorways, the gate might open automatically even at the manually operated lanes. Toll authorities sometimes change their toll payment options. Check with the applicable toll authority to understand the different payment options that may be available.

  1. If you opted in at the counter:
  • Yes, you can use the EXPRESSTOLL service on the M50 toll motorway only.
  • For all other toll locations, you will need to stop and use the self-pay option.
  • Please contact the Enterprise counter agent to determine the availability of an alternative vehicle equipped with EXPRESSTOLL for a preferred experience.
  1. If you opted out at the rental counter:
  • No, you cannot opt in from the vehicle if there is not an installed transponder.
  • If you incur M50 tolls, you should pay them directly to toll authority.
  • If not paid within the defined time, you will be billed the cost of the toll and an additional handling fee of €8.5 (exempt from VAT) by Enterprise.

If you choose not to use EXPRESSTOLL to pay your rental vehicle tolls, you must leave the shield box closed for the entire duration of the rental. You can prepay M50 tolls before the trip or you can pay an incurred M50 toll before 8 p.m. the day after the toll is incurred – see payment options below.

Both pre- and post-payments can be made in one of the following ways:

Online: Visit https://www.eflow.ie/, click on Pay a Toll and enter the license plate of the rental car.

In Person: Go to any Payzone approved location nationwide and provide the license plate information of the vehicle for which you want to pay tolls and the date the tolls were incurred. You can find Payzone approved locations where you see this sign:

VERY IMPORTANT. Make sure to keep your receipt for any payments you make. Always check your receipt to ensure your payment has been made to the correct license plate number.

If the toll is not paid with one of the approved options by 8 p.m. the following day, Enterprise will be invoiced by M50 and will pay the M50 toll charges on your behalf. Enterprise will then charge you for the tolls and an additional handling fee of €8.5 (exempt from VAT) for each M50 toll that was not paid during your rental agreement period.

If you open the EXPRESSTOLL shield box and use the toll payment service at any time during your rental period, M50 tolls that you pre-paid directly to M50 may also be included in the total amount charged to your credit card. If the EXPRESSTOLL tag malfunctions and the toll barrier does not open when you approach it with the shield box open, press the Assistance button located on the barrier or booth and follow the instructions given to you by the agent. If the device does not function properly while in an express toll lane (eToll), be prepared to move your vehicle to a standard toll lane.
There is a €4.86 (incl. VAT) service fee per rental day with a maximum of 5 days, €24.30 (incl. VAT), per rental contract, plus the cost of tolls.
  • If you add EXPRESSTOLL to your rental contract you will pay the service fees to Enterprise on you contract.
  • If you opt-in to using EXPRESSTOLL by activating the installed transponder you will pay service fees along with tolls as outlined below.

Tolls incurred during your rental period will be charged to the debit or credit card on file with your Rental Agreement once the toll data is received from the toll authority, within 4-6 weeks.

Renters who don’t have a credit or debit card on file will receive a paper invoice for all toll-related charges. Tolls incurred are billed at the cash toll rate.

The charges appear on your credit card statement as “EXPRESSTOLL” followed by your rental agreement number and the phone number for our EXPRESSTOLL customer care team.

If credit card processing error occurs for the EXPRESSTOLL service and we are unable to bill your credit card, you will receive a paper invoice via mail. You will need to complete payment at the EXPRESSTOLL renter payment portal by visiting www.ExpressTollGo.com as outlined in the paper invoice. Please note that for privacy and security purposes, the customer service agent is not able to make the payment on your behalf.

We depend on government and toll agencies for all information related to tolls. In most cases, that takes one to four weeks - although, in some circumstances, it may take longer.
Tolls get reported to us over different time frames depending on the tolling authority and how the toll was recorded, by plate or transponder. Our goal is to process toll charges on one invoice but occasionally new tolls are reported to us after we have already processed an invoice for the same rental agreement.
We receive only electronic notifications - which reduce processing expenses and time delays – and therefore paper copies of tolls are generally not available.
